BSM Reduces Food Waste and Increases Profitability With
Hyperspectral Imaging and Machine Learning Technology
Innovation Fueled by: TERRA, The Food + Ag Tech Accelerator
Industry Trend: Food Safety
Food companies are under pressure to maintain food safety standards and are seeking technologies that can automate identifying various contaminants, such as foreign objects.
BSM's Challenge
Beta San Miguel (BSM), Mexico's largest private sugar cane producer, needed to reduce recalls on their products by increasing foreign object detection in their internal repackage process.
RocketSpace Solution
BSM leveraged RocketSpace's expertise to find technologies that could help them increase foreign object detection accuracy in the repackaging process.
ImpactVision Partnership
Through TERRA, The Food + AgTech Accelerator, RocketSpace identified and stewarded a pilot partnership between BSM and ImpactVision, a startup using hyperspectral imaging and machine learning to detect contaminants during food processing.
Results: BSM + ImpactVision
ImpactVision was able to improve BSM's foreign object detection of any material that could be a potential contaminant in the sugar included wood, threads, plastics, and paper clips.
ImpactVision’s technology had a 98% accuracy rate in detecting foreign objects. Their technology detected objects that x-rays and metal detectors missed. This increase in accuracy reduced BSM's labor cost.
The partnership is ongoing, with BSM installing ImpactVision’s foreign object detector cameras in several of its warehouses and factories.
