BSM Grows Topline Revenue and Profitability Through
Microbe Detection Technology That Improves Crop Production
Innovation Fueled by: TERRA, The Food + Ag Tech Accelerator
Industry Trend: IoT + AgTech
With the development of agtech software and the IoT, corporations have an opportunity to use analytics to improve their crop production, soil health, and yields.
BSM's Challenge
Beta San Miguel (BSM), Mexico's largest private sugarcane producer, is seeking solutions to better understand the soil in their sugarcane crops, increase crop yield, and improve crop health by understanding the microbiome composition in the soil.
RocketSpace Solution
RocketSpace worked with BSM to find a technology company that can help them increase crop health and yield quality, understanding the role of microorganisms in the sugar cane as well ensuring sugar quality for customers’ satisfaction.
Biome Makers Partnership
Through TERRA, The Food + AgTech Accelerator, RocketSpace paired BSM with Biome Makers, a smart microbial discovery startup specialized in identifying and understanding the microbiome to provide comprehensive analysis of agricultural and industrial processes.
Biome Makers uses DNA sequencing technologies and proprietary intelligent computing systems to ease detailed information and recommendations that allow customers to improve their agricultural production and the quality of their products.
Results: BSM + Biome Makers
BSM and Biome Makers launched a joint venture to create the first sugarcane microbiome platform.
In order to do this, Biome Makers analyzed roughly 200 samples to map the entire sugarcane production process in 4 different mills, including soil, stems, roots, leaves, sugarcane by-products, and sugar. They next will analyze juices, plants, and sugar in order to discover the DNA of each one.
This platform is anticipated to help BSM optimize their soil health, improve crop production, increase their revenue, and reduce costs and waste.
